Everything's Moved

Aug. 27th, 2008 | 09:25 am

Sorry LiveJournal, fickle person that I am, I like the way blogspot deals with photos better. Any further blog-like activities I do will be at: http://frontlawn.blogspot.com/ from now on. In fact, they have been for a while. I just never said here that things had moved for sure.

A move to Blogspot?

Apr. 28th, 2008 | 02:23 pm

I'm going to test Blogspot for a bit in the hope that it can make it easier to maintain a blog with some nice looking photos. I'd like some opinions though. Let me know...

The new posts are at http://frontlawn.blogspot.com

Since Blogspot doesn't have anything equivalent to the LiveJournal photo galleries, I'll set up a Picasa web albums account to go with the Blogspot one. It's at http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/droneale

Ugly Photos

Apr. 24th, 2008 | 06:20 pm
location: Palmerston North, New Zealand

I think I've figured out one of the reasons why some of the photos here look so terrible once they get posted. In addition to all the things like re-sizing and compressing pictures, it seems something is going wrong with the way LiveJournal deals with portrait format pictures. There's some nasty, nasty pixelation going on with these photos but not with the landscape format ones (They're just conventionally nasty). Maybe I need to switch to a different host. I shall take a look at the Blogspot/Picasa double team from google when I get some time. Until, it's ugly photos I'm afraid.

Whakapapa Gorge

Apr. 24th, 2008 | 06:09 pm
location: Whakapapa, New Zealand

Before the NZAC photography course the other weekend I did a little climbing at Whakapapa gorge. The rock there looks like it's about to crumble to pieces but is actually very solid and I had a couple of nice climbs. The night before we'd camped at the bottom of the Whakapapa road and I'd been trying to take pictures of the stars. I forgot to change the iso setting on my camera back to something reasonable after this so the photos from the gorge are a little grainy and rather overexposed. In the pictures pay special attention to what's going on with Claydon's harness as he reaches the crux of a route on the golden wall.

music: Kings of Convenience: Quit is the New Loud

N. and I took a Sunday drive out to Makara, about 20km west of Wellington. There is a walkway along the coast, heading south which we followed as far as the WWII gun emplacements before coming back. The views of the coast are good but the walk isn't that exciting and pretty much just follows the edge of a sheep farm. Heavy rain the day before and warm weather following meant the air was full of bugs. We ingested one every hundred meters or so. I wanted to have a play with my new camera but the glarey overcast sky made it hard to get any good pictures. The rock pools were fun though.

There are a couple more photos in the gallery. For some reason, pictures that I post here are getting re-sized or re-compressed in such a way that they are coming out at very low quality. I suspect it's either something happing on the livejournal server or with the program I'm using to upload batches of photos. It's making me wonder if I should move new entries of this blog to something like Blogspot and let Picasa Web Albums handle new galleries. I'd be interested in any thoughts on this.
